Alexander Girard

New York, United States of America

Alexander Girard was born in 1907 in New York City, and was one of the key figures of post-war American design, alongside his close friends George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. The focus of his broad body of work was textile design: as head of the Herman Miller Company’s textile division, Girard designed a wide range of textiles that reflected his love of festive colours and patterns. His strong designs favour abstract and geometric forms, in tandem with bright constellations of colours. His upholstery fabrics remain as timeless and vital as ever, with many still sold today.
