We've just opened our first ever bricks and mortar store. HOLD is a design-conscious shop that invites you to discover inspirational products hand-picked for their quality and provenance.

“People may think I'm mad opening a shop in the current climate, but it's not a decision I've taken lightly. People are looking for that human connection, retail experiences that cannot be replicated online. The friendly welcome, being able to touch the products and to see the quality first hand. I've been told I'm brave, but I'm just following my instincts and love of good quality design.” Kelly Hyatt, Creative Director, Lagom Design

We've been thinking about opening a bricks and mortar store for several years, but it had to be in the right town and location. Some people believe online competition has killed the high street, but we're positive about its future. People are looking for something different, a shopping experience where you can engage with staff and feel the quality of the products.

The North Laine area of Brighton is perfect for us. It's full of quirky, independent shops and has held on to its unique identity when many high streets have become identikit with no regional variation.

THE PERFECT SPOT

Like the products we sell, the area has a story, and since the 1840s, the North Laine area has been a hub for small industries and artisan workers. Brighton was once a tiny fishing village, but as the town became more fashionable in the 18th Century, the industry diversified as the town grew. By the 19th Century in the North Laine, you could find small-scale foundries, breweries, dressmakers, milliners, jewellers and printing companies.

When doing our research, we were delighted to find out that we have set up shop in a building that was once home to a lithographic printer, Mr Henry Ledigo. He ran a printing business from the premises as early as 1871 and was last recorded as occupying the premises in 1923. He was responsible for installing the original Victorian shopfront and entrance steps you see today.

Shop fittings are a combination of old and new, paying homage to the history of the building and using the best elements of contemporary design. We've used natural materials such as Walnut, Ash and Oak and display cabinets made by German company Vitsoe whose ethos, 'living better with less that lasts longer', ties in perfectly with the ethics of our business.
