Smell is one of the most evocative senses, and D.S. & DURGA harnesses its power to create invisible stories to carry with you throughout the day. Be it Big Sur After Rain, evoking the smell of Highway One or Rose Atlantic, described as summer in a bottle, all of their scents have a story to tell. People, music and places inspire their products, and each scent has an accompanying playlist to engage the senses even further.

Co-founder and perfumer for D.S. & DURGA, David Seth Moltz, gives us a peek into the brand's narrative.

How would you describe the brand to somebody discovering it for the first time?

Since 2008, D.S. (a musician-turned-self-taught-perfumer) & Durga (an architect-turned-designer) have been making original perfumes with the rarest, premium ingredients. All perfumes are created in-house in Brooklyn, NY.

What was the first D.S. & DURGA scent? What was the story behind it?

Cowboy Grass. It started off as a handmade tincture of herbs, citrus, and flowers modded with pure vetyver, amber, and musk. It defined the raw Americana aesthetic of early aughts Brooklyn.

We love that every scent has its own playlist -  if D.S. & DURGA were a mixtape, what tracks would be on it?

There's a greatest hits playlist - take a listen. We are hyper-specific to each fragrance. If you want to know David (the DS) or Kavi (the Durga)'s personal favorite tunes, check those playlists.

What's the strangest or most unexpected thing that has inspired a fragrance?

The aroma of a rainbow, if you could get your nose on it.

Which scent in your lineup is the biggest curveball — the one people don't expect to love, but do?

Probably Steamed Rainbow or Amber Kiso

Are there any films, books, or artworks that you wish you could bottle the essence of?

Too many to count. I work very detailed and small scale. I've made a fragrance about one scene in Beetlejuice. There are tons of literary, musical, and artistic references in what we do. And we make original music and artwork for the scents as well.

What's the best way for someone to choose a fragrance if they can't smell it in person?

Read all the info on the product page. Give yourself time to wear the fragrance. It was made with a lot of thought and care.
