A SINGLE MAN

A SINGLE MAN

Directed by Tom Ford

A sorrowful beauty infuses every frame of this remarkable debut feature from fashion designer Tom Ford. Loosely based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man visits a single day in the life of gay Brit expat George Falconer (Colin Firth), a teacher at a Los Angeles college who plans on suicide to end his pain over the death of his lover, Jim (Matthew Goode). The film is stunningly visualized, with Ford achieving a feeling for light and texture to rival Wong Kar-wai's. Life with Jim is seen in black-and-white flashbacks that contrast vividly with the rich color palette of his present encounters, notably with Kenny, beautifully played by Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy), a student whose interests exceed the academic, and his British friend Charley (Julianne Moore), a divorcee who fantasizes that George will marry her. Moore is explosively good, especially in her drunk scene. But the film belongs to Firth. Uncanny at showing the heart crumbling under George's elegant exterior, he gives the performance of his career. Ford is a true visionary, but it's his humanity that gives the love story a ravishing, bruised grandeur.

The 13 bedrooms have a rustic, Ralph Lauren-on-sea charm, making use of heavy linens and light woods, while the sitting room, called the Yacht Club, has armchairs to sink into and sailing memorabilia on the walls. Best of all is the soaring, glass-walled restaurant, where the fire is kept stacked with birch logs all day.

www.hotelj.com

IF Mode avoids oily chains, complex tubes with hidden dirt traps, and the clutter of traditional bike features. Meant for city commuters rather than bicycle warriors, it looks at home folded up on a subway or in an office, like other well designed accessories in your life. It also performs on the street like any lightweight, well-balanced full size bike.

www.areaware.com

He also sold his own motorbike to finance the production of the full carbon fiber shells, the kind used in Formula One racing. The 'inside garnish' (to quote Coste) is a soft lining of decadent burgundy nappa lambskin, chosen for its comfort and anti-bacterial properties. Henceforth providing a 'reassuring cocoon'. Clearly a design pedant, Coste has given his helmets a unique signature quirk - a small crest that runs along the top, as inspired by the armoury worn by medieval knights.

www.ateliersruby.com

LA PÂTISSERIE DES RÊVES

Paris

Whatever Parisian pastry chef extraordinaire, Philippe Conticini, does gets noticed. His talent for creating desserts that are art in all meanings of the word has found yet another expression this September when he unveiled his latest creation, La Pâtisserie des Rêves (the patisserie of dreams), in the chic 7th arrondissement in Paris. Nothing in the design of the sleek 29 square-metre boutique is reminiscent of a traditional European konditorei. Most strikingly, the stars of the space — the desserts, cakes and pastries — are displayed on a round platform in the centre. Each of the 15 culinary masterpieces is presented under its own temperature-controlled glass bell suspended from the ceiling. Customers order their selection from the staff, after which each order appears directly from the kitchen. Both ideas evoke the feel of a meticulous laboratory where precious specimens are handled. Conticini has been in the culinary limelight for more than two decades with his own TV show, several books, restaurants and awards.

This meant two things: setting up a live band and a CD-album project.

In musical terms the goal of the FCQ is to set an example of how dance floor-friendly contemporary production can fruitfully meet the musical craftsmanship of the past, creating music that sounds as hip as the classic jazz records but is at the same time structurally polished and easily accessible music of today. Not housey nu-jazz, but jazz in the classic modernist spirit.

www.thefivecornersquintet.com

Contemporary furniture ranges from the multi award winning injection moulded Bellini Chair to hand made and bespoke pieces. Antique furniture with clean lines and upholstery in luxurious fabrics give a relaxed, elegant and modern feel. Giovanna Ticciati seeks out, supports and promotes new talent and artisans from around the world and many unique, hand made and exclusive pieces can be found in the shop in addition to one off and limited edition photographs.

Giovanna Ticciati has worked as an art director and on design projects creating scenes and interiors. She has sourced and commissioned pieces compiling an extensive sourcebook and discovering small workshops. The excitement of finding someone immersed in their craft able to make a bespoke piece combined with the frustration of discovering something beautiful that does not fit into a brief are how the idea of the shop began to develop and Giovanna Ticciati opened in December 2007. Giovanna Ticciati offers a finding service. If you are looking for a particular piece you will be emailed items matching your description as soon as they arrive in the shop.

New Street, Petworth, West Sussex GU28 OAS, United Kingdom.

Tel:01798 342777

mail@giovannaticciati.com
www.giovannaticciati.com

The intertwining trajectory of the loop relates to the 24-hour living and working cycle of the family, where individual working spaces and bedrooms are aligned but collective areas are situated at the crossing points of the paths. In a similar manner these unfolding lines are materialized with glass and concrete, swapping the conventional use of these materials.

GREEN SPRING CLEANING

Spruce up your living space with a little green spring cleaning.

All-Purpose Cleaner
To make a simple cleaner for wiping down counter tops, sinks, and cupboards, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. For cleaning linoleum and tile floors, place this same mixture in a bucket and dip your mop in.

Air Freshener
To get rid of unpleasant odors, leave out a halved lime (make sure that the cut side is facing upward) in a bowl of baking soda. Instead of throwing the lime and baking soda into the trash when you’re finished using them, grind them up in your garbage disposal instead to freshen the surrounding area. If you’re a coffee drinker, don’t toss out your coffee grounds after use. Instead, put them in a bowl to absorb odors. To keep kitchen cupboards and drawers smelling fresh, add a few dried bay leaves.

Fabric Freshener
To freshen couch cushions, use a spray bottle filled with water and two drops of an essential oil such as lemon, orange, or peppermint. Essential oils are very potent, so one or two drops is all you need. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients and mist whenever freshening is needed.

Carpet Freshener
Crush a couple of bay leaves and mix them with a bowl of baking soda. Add one to two drops of an essential oil and mix with a spoon. Sprinkle this mixture on rugs and carpets, and allow it to stand for a few minutes before you vacuum it up.

Cooktops and Ovens
For cleaning cooktops, dust with a bit of baking soda and squeeze some lime juice over it. You can use the cut lime half as a scouring tool to scrub the cooktop. Use a toothbrush to scour any hard-to-reach spots. For tough spots, make a paste out of some lime juice and baking soda, and let it sit on the problem areas for several minutes before scouring. For ovens, make a paste out of lime juice, baking soda, and salt. Wipe out the inside of the oven with a damp sponge, then apply the paste. Allow the paste to stand for about a half-hour, then scrub it off using a scouring pad.

Hard-to-Reach Grime
Have an oddly shaped vase that you can’t seem to clean the inside of? Squeeze a drop of dish soap or some vinegar into the vase and add water along with a small amount of dried rice. Cover the top with your hand, shake and swirl the rice around, then rinse.

This may sound like it verges on the whimsical, it is the baby of the team who are responsible for the notable restaurant 404 and Andy Wahloo bar. Derriére is located at 69, Rue des Gravilliers 75003 Paris.

ATOMIC FLOYD- Headphones

ATOMIC FLOYD

Headphones

Borne out of obsession, Atomic Floyd headphones are the offspring of a pioneering collective of designers and engineers. Their belief: that superb sound and great aesthetics should go hand in hand.

Their method: years spent pushing industry boundaries through experimentation, invention, testing and crafting. The result: slick, spectacular in-ear headphones with jaw-dropping acoustic performance.

Atomic Floyd founder James Strong, comments: “Our headphones have been conceived by engineers at the top of their game, shaped by designers responsible for some of the most cutting-edge products of the last 10 years and built with the finest components. The result is great looking headphones that deliver an unrivalled sound experience”

He adds, “I’d spent years seeing brands buying off-the-shelf headphones, branding them up and selling them with a massive price uplift. But there’s no skill, no beauty and certainly no thought in products like that. We wanted Atomic Floyd to be the polar opposite. We are defying categories and defining a new industry, beyond the traditional parameters of both fashion and technology.”

www.atomicfloyd.com
