Diane Birch

DIANE BIRCH

Bible Belt

With its white suburban soul and pleasant, midtempo pop, Diane Birch’s debut sounds like a relic from the ‘70s singer/songwriter era. Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Carole King are obvious touchstones here, and the twentysomething Birch (who wasn’t born until the mid-‘80s) approximates their vintage flair by aligning herself with the likes of R&B singer Betty Wright and producer Steve Greenberg, both of whom helped launch Joss Stone’s career several years prior. While Stone’s debut focused on the sheer power of her vocals, however, Bible Belt functions instead as a showcase for Birch’s songwriting. She pens every song here -- a marked difference from Stone, who performed cover songs on her own debut -- and sings them with understated grace, adding a touch of grit to the sustained high notes of “Fire Escape” and some coffeehouse sass to the sprightly “Valentino.” Few rookie songwriters play to their strengths this well, and that’s the charm of this record, which doesn’t blow your socks off as much as whet your appetite to fill your glass, recline your chair, and enjoy the record from start to finish.

Positano

POSITANO

Italy

Visiting in 1953, John Steinbeck enthused: 'Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.' Today, it is no less enchanting. Lying an hour and a quarter south of Naples, the drive to Positano takes you past Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, past Sorrento and then along the mountain coastline until the vertiginous descent to the town begins. Seen from below, the buildings seem to have been stacked one on top of another, climbing from the tiny crescent bay towards the cliffs that loom precipitously over the town. The pastel colours - primrose, pink, terracotta, peach and white - give the town a theatrical aspect that couldn't be mistaken for anywhere else. In the mid-1950s Positano became desirable as a holiday destination and, for a while, rivalled Capri as the playground for the rich and famous. Patricia Highsmith based the little port of Mongibello in The Talented Mr Ripleyon Positano, although Anthony Minghella chose to film that part of his adaptation in Ischia. A low-wattage celebrity still glimmers here and there and, with world-class restaurants and ultra-luxe hotels, the town still attracts a glamorous, affluent crowd.

The perfect place to stay: Il San Pietro Di Positano

THE MICHELBERGER

Berlin

The Michelberger is a budget hotel in Berlin, which takes its name from the founder, Tom Michelberger, a 31-year-old from southern Germany. Tom is the central figure in a patchwork of friends who came together to create the hotel. With rates starting at 59 EUR per night, the Michelberger falls into the budget hotel category, but unlike most budget hotels which are typically very standard and conventional, the Michelberger has been designed by the internationally renowned designer Werner Aisslinger, to provide a unique guest experience.

The 119 room hotel is located next to the famous Oberbaum Bridge and the river Spree. Five different room categories offer a range of different layouts. The rooms display a high level of space efficiency and lots of vertical drama and airiness – a feat allowed by the placing of loft bed areas above the bathrooms. Most rooms are for singles, couples and threesomes but other options including The Big One allow groups of 4 or even more to room together.

Visit the hotel website here.

Originally opened in 1928 as a department store, the property was seized by the wartime government before being occupied by the post-war, Communist regime until 1956. Leena Kisonen is a Helsinki-based graphic designer specializing in surface design and illustration. She creates her style through paper cut, which gives her works an edgy, handmade feel. She works and collaborates with the talented people at the Kolmekasi Studios and studies at the Aalto University School of Art and Design. She often finds herself fascinated by the weird little things in everyday life, which are also the main inspiration of her work.

DAHLIA RUG

By Claydies

Dahlia is a series of round rugs. With a background in traditional floor ornaments, Claydies has used geometry and reflections to interpret rugs in a new way. Using the motive of the Dahlia flower, hence the name of the rug, Dahlia is both decorative and adds colour and dynamism to decor.

Claydies has found particular inspiration in genuine rugs, where the decoration often contains repetition, reflection and floral motives. Armed only with a mirror, a compass and coloured pencils Claydies has toyed with traditional geometric forms and created a pattern that is modern in form, colour and expression.

New Lottie Davies prints

We have added 11 new editions to our existing collection of Lottie Davies prints.

Find out more >

Lottie's profile

Lottie Davies was born in Guildford, UK, in 1971. She had a happy and conventional childhood in Surrey with her parents and two brothers, and was educated in Alton and Godalming. After a degree in philosophy at St Andrews University in Scotland, she moved back to England to learn the photographic trade as an assistant in London, where she has been based for the past fourteen years. Lottie has been working as a professional photographer since 2000.

Lottie's unique style has been employed in a variety of contexts, including newspapers, glossy magazines, books and advertising. She has won recognition in numerous awards, including the Association of Photographers' Awards, the International Color Awards, the Schweppes Photographic Portrait Awards, and the Foto8 Summer Show 2008. Most recently, she has garnered international acclaim with her image Quints, which won First Prize at the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Awards 2008 and now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Her travel work ranges over six continents, and has taken her to such diverse destinations as the Namib Desert, the Julian Alps, the Gulf Islands of British Colombia and the frozen island of Svalbard in the Arctic Circle. In the course of her adventures she has had tea with a Guatemalan presidential candidate, made stir-fry for Bushmen in the Kalahari, been bitten by a monkey in Nepal, got lost in Slovenia, tasted every whisky on the beautiful Isle of Islay, and faced a charging elephant in Namibia!

As a photojournalist, she focuses on lesser-known communities and on ethno-political issues, putting forward a sharply critical view of contemporary Western complacency, with a desire to illuminate the lives of those often overlooked.

Her portraiture and editorial work is equally wide-ranging, from highly-produced set-pieces to 'found' imagery, and this breadth of experience in varying approaches informs the fine art work for which Lottie is rapidly becoming known.

Her fine art work is concerned with stories and personal histories, the tales and myths we use to structure our lives: memories, life-stories, beliefs. She takes inspiration from classical and modern painting, cinema and theatre as well as the imaginary worlds of literature. She employs a deliberate reworking of our visual vocabulary, playing on our notions of nostalgia, visual conventions and subconscious 'looking habits', with the intention of evoking a sense of narrative and movement. Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery in London, has described Davies' work as "brilliantly imaginative".

Siwa paper products

SIWA

Paper products by Naoto Fukasawa

Siwa bags are made from an extraordinary tear and water resistant paper called Soft Naori. Soft Naori is a type of paper developed by Japanese company Onao. Made from wood pulp and polyoefin using a 'washi-suki' paper manufacturing method, the paper is soft and flexible, extremely strong and water-resistant. The paper becomes fabric-like and is soft and tactile to the touch, yet the bags are extremely strong and hardwearing. Over time and use, the bags will show some wear from creasing or abrasion, yet the effect is rather like worn-in denim jeans, very much in keeping with the Japanese notion of wabi-sabi, where everyday items that show imperfections through daily use are very appealing. Designer Naoto Fukasawa collaborated with Onao in Japan, using this wonderful material to produce these attractive, minimal and altogether chic bags.

HELPING MAN'S BEST FRIEND

Dogs Trust

We are working in support of our best loved charity - Dogs Trust. As of June 2010 we will be donating a percentage of profits from each card sold. We will also be running one off charity weeks where all profits from our web shop will go towards helping them in their good work.

About Dogs Trust

Founded in 1891, Dogs Trust (formerly the National Canine Defence League) is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK. Their mission is to bring about the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life, free from the threat of unnecessary destruction.

Each year they care for around 16,000 dogs at their nationwide network of 17 Rehoming Centres. No healthy dog is ever destroyed. They run subsidised neutering campaigns in areas of the UK with the most acute stray dog problems. Education Officers give thousands of classroom presentations every year and free teaching resources are made available to all schools in the UK. The FREEDOM Project helps pet owners who are fleeing domestic violence by fostering their animals while they start a new life. The HOPE Project gives preventative veterinary care to dogs belonging to homeless people. They advise government on any matters concerning dog ownership. They have also established a charity in Ireland that runs a rehoming centre in Dublin and assist overseas animal welfare charities by training their staff in best practice.

All work is funded by public generosity. So, if you love dogs, please make a donation.

HOTEL J GASHAGA

Stockholm

A simple but stunning waterfront property which is perpetually flooded with light and peopled with friendly staff. The 13 bedrooms have a rustic, Ralph Lauren-on-sea charm, making use of heavy linens and light woods, while the sitting room, called the Yacht Club, has armchairs to sink into and sailing memorabilia on the walls. Best of all is the soaring, glass-walled restaurant, where the fire is kept stacked with birch logs all day.

IF Mode by Areaware

The clean and striking IF Mode is aimed at commuters of the mobile generation who, until now, may have not considered cycling or folding bikes to be an option. IF Mode avoids oily chains, complex tubes with hidden dirt traps, and the clutter of traditional bike features. Meant for city commuters rather than bicycle warriors, it looks at home folded up on a subway or in an office, like other well designed accessories in your life. It also performs on the street like any lightweight, well-balanced full size bike.

LES ATELIERS RUBY

Bon Helmets

Parisian designer Jerome Coste drew on Steve McQueen iconography, old-school racing cars and quite possibly the six separate head traumas he’s survived when he set about developing the Pavillion range of motorcycle accessories for Ruby. He also sold his own motorbike to finance the production of the full carbon fiber shells, the kind used in Formula One racing. The 'inside garnish' (to quote Coste) is a soft lining of decadent burgundy nappa lambskin, chosen for its comfort and anti-bacterial properties. Henceforth providing a 'reassuring cocoon'. Clearly a design pedant, Coste has given his helmets a unique signature quirk - a small crest that runs along the top, as inspired by the armoury worn by medieval knights.

THE PATISSERIE OF DREAMS – Paris

LA PÂTISSERIE DES RÊVES

Paris

Whatever Parisian pastry chef extraordinaire, Philippe Conticini does, gets noticed. His talent for creating desserts that are art in all meanings of the word has found yet another expression this September when he unveiled his latest creation, La Pâtisserie des Rêves (the patisserie of dreams), in the chic 7th arrondissement in Paris. Nothing in the design of the sleek 29 square-metre boutique is reminiscent of a traditional European Konditorei. Most strikingly, the stars of the space — the desserts, cakes and pastries — are displayed on a round platform in the centre. Each of the 15 culinary masterpieces is presented under its own temperature-controlled glass bell suspended from the ceiling. Customers order their selection from the staff, after which each order appears directly from the kitchen. Both ideas evoke the feel of a meticulous laboratory where precious specimens are handled. Conticini has been in the culinary limelight for more than two decades with his own TV show, several books, restaurants and awards.
