Helen Dardik

Born in Odessa by the Black Sea, lived in Siberia, studied art in Israel and then moved to Canada in 1993 and began
working as a graphic designer and illustrator. Helen mostly works in vector, but once in a while watercolour, gouache,
oil and embroidery find their way into her repertoire. Helen finds inspiration in her own childhood, vintage books,
midcentury design and her 3 little girls.. We caught up with her to ask a few questions...

What would be your perfect day:

It would be in the Summer. Open windows. Kids reading or playing on their own. I just had the best idea for a
pattern (while soaking in a bathtub), and I'm sketching it. I guess that's more of a moment, rather than a day,
but if a day has that or similar moment than I proclaim it perfect. Wait... wait... add to that an endless supply
of olives and mustard sandwiches... and now it's really perfect!

The last thing you bought which you love:

A few days ago I've purchased a soft sculpture of Mr. Sid Square from Jess Quinn Etsy shop as my daughter
Lola's 10th birthday present. She's going to love him. Maybe even as much as I love him.

What is playing on your music player:

Not much lately. Mostly Cee Lo Green and... I've been listening to the radio programs from the 1940s and 50s for the last
few months. It's funny (in a - I'm glad those days are over - kind of way) and there's lots of them. Love how often women
used to faint and listen to their husbands:).

An object you would never part with:

Just one? That's really hard to pick just one. I've recently got rid of everything I could part easily with and the only objects
of mine in the house are the ones I can't part with. I guess I'll say my swedish yellow clogs and my Gustavsberg prunus
cup would be the objects I'll save (after the kids are safely out) if the fire suddenly broke in my house:).

A recent 'Find':

These magic beans that keep my coffee warm - the Coffee Joulies. Perfect for a slow coffee addict like me... or, maybe
I'll just make an necklace out of them.

Favorite website:

Today... it's www.wherethelovelythingsare.com but who knows what it's going to be tomorrow.

Best gift you have received:

The iPad. I really don't know what can compete with that. It's so much fun and I share it with the rest of the family.

Favourite artist:

There are many. The solid members of the gang of awesome for me are: Tove Jansson, Taro Gomi, Marc Boutavant,
Abner Graboff, Alexander Girard and Yoshitomo Nara. Right now Yoshitomo Nara's work stirs me the most.

Favourite city, and why:

Odessa (Ukraine). I was born there. It is a beautiful city by the Black Sea with funny people and unique culture.
I've yet to feel better anywhere else. Paris would be a close second.

What book are you reading:

There are a few books in the mix at the moment. I've got COLOR MOVES: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay on my desk.
I'm also reading BLUEBEARD by Kurt Vonnegut and, of course a chapter out of Harry Potter book to my girls every night.
We are half way through the fourth book - Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix.

UK-based artist David Mach uses thousands of matchsticks to create sculptures, then burns them and leaves them charred. Mach uses matches imported from Japan for their colored heads, and sticks them into clay mold—forming real and fictional characters, such as Betty Boop, Charlie Chaplin, and Marilyn Monroe.

Produced using more than 5500 toy soldiers. The portrait is of a Chinese soldier boy taken by photographer Robert Capa. The image was used on the front cover of LIFE magazine, January 1938 to cover the Sino Japanese War. The toy soldiers are manufactured in China, hence the title “Made in China”.

Gemma Correll

Gemma Correll is known for her "quirky characters in strange situations". Her work has a strong narrative bias and
features hand-drawn characters, comics, typography and pattern. Her work has been featured in magazines, books
and in advertising, as well as on products ranging from T-shirts to Umbrellas. Gemma has exhibited her work
internationally, in the US, China and Europe and has been featured in various international Art and Design publications.
She was the recipient of a Young Guns cube from the Art Directors Club of New York in 2010. We caught up with
her to ask a few questions...

What would be your perfect day:

Spending a day sitting outside in the sun, with an endless supply iced coffee, my sketchbook, a couple of good magazines
and my pugs (Norman Pickles and Bella), with no deadlines to worry about, and no noisy teenagers filming bad rap videos
in the car park behind my flat (This actually happens... They think we can't see them.)

The last thing you bought which you love:

It hasn't arrived yet, but I recently bought this souvenir tray of New Jersey from the US to add to my (currently very small)
collection of American state trays, which is part of a larger collection of Americana that I've collected over the years.

What is playing on your music player:

The last thing I listened to was an album of Hank Williams covers by contemporary bands.

An object you would never part with:

The Snoopy cuddly toy that I had as a baby. It's quite manky now but I couldn't throw it away.

A recent 'Find':

I got some pretty good 50s drinking glasses recently. However, due to a mixture of their fragility
and my utter clumsiness, I've already broken one.

Favorite website:

If I could only choose one website to look at every day, it would be The Guardian's. That's a bit of a boring answer.
Let me replace that with "The Pugs In Costumes Tumblr blog".

Best gift you have received:

I got a Chocolate orange for Christmas, which was brilliant.

Favourite artist:

It's so difficult to pick just one. I really like Simone Lia's comics, so let's say Simone Lia.

Favourite city, and why:

San Francisco, for the following reasons : It has a beautiful climate (never too hot or too cold) and great mix of cultures.
It's a big city that feels small. It's a great place to eat out, drink coffee, look at art, draw things, people watch and go
thrift shopping (which are all of my favourite things). There are some really amazing mid-century houses that I would
kill to live in, as well as those gorgeous pastel-coloured Victorian houses... oh, and there are lots of Pugs there, which
is of course my main criteria for excellence.

What book are you reading:

The Heretics Daughter by Kathleen Kent.

Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Studio Tipi is duo Keith-yin Sun & Judi Chan. The two started their paper goods
brand Pigeon Post and illustration studio Studio Tipi in 2009. Their folk and vintage inspired style has won them numerous
awards, including the latest D&AD in-book award. Their latest projects include Christmas Card for Monocle and a special
collaboration with British Fashion designer Lu Flux. We caught up with them both to ask a few questions...

What would be your perfect day:

K & J: sorry to sound hippy but our perfect day would be the day when no one does, says or thinks any mean things
to/on/against/about each other.

The last thing you bought which you love:

J: a vintage Dior hat from the 50's. (Judi is wearing it in the picture)
K: an antique drafting table from a local antique shop.

What is playing on your music player:

An object you would never part with:

K & J: pretty much everything we have at home…

A recent 'Find':

K & J: our amazing master screen printer, Bob, who's printing one of our commissions now and doing an
AMAZING job. Go Bob!!!

Favorite website:

K & J: our local library system's website, constantly upgrading with better features, virtually unlimited resources
at your finger (or mouse) tip.

Best gift you have received:

J: an "Acronym" SS-JF1 jacket for my birthday, designed by our genius friend Errolson Hugh.
K: a brilliant cheese grater, 4 years on still shaving away like new.

Favourite artist:

J: to name a few among the many favourites: Bruno Liljefors, Seurat, Dürer, Monet…
K: my three kings Pablo, Paul and Henri…

Favourite city, and why:

J: Paris, above all the obvious reasons (galleries, museums , antique shops and flea markets…), it's the sweets and
pastry shops that makes it the top city.
K: a bit romantic I suppose but my favourite city would be the turn of the century Paris (or the Stein's Paris).
For reasons, please watch Midnight in paris.

What book are you reading:

K & J: we constantly have a few books on the go, recently finished: Blow by Blow (the story about Isabella Blow),
re-reading for the fourth time: Murakami Haruki's 1Q84; in progress: Picasso: Life with Dora Maar: Love and War
1935-1945 and Paris Sweets by Dorie Greenspan.

We've collaborated with Keith & Judi to produce an exciting collection which we'll be launching in the New Year. In the
meantime you can see their beautifully crafted illustrations here.

This video shows an insight on how this lovable little rabbit is created and how intensively Bruna creates her every detail with just a paintbrush.
